This pencil portrait of Gillian Welch by M. Scott Hay. Such nuanced rendition could only come from meeting the singer in person as he recounts:
"I met Gillian Welch after she sang some of her songs at a bar in Minneapolis. My buddy Darin was with me. I took off one of my boots and asked Gillian to sign it for me. She did. She then told me that I was the first person to ever ask her to sign their cowboy boot. She showed me her boots that she got from a shop in Nashville. They were in need of repair as were mine..."
The Art of Manliness discusses the tradition of note-keeping through the years in a blog post by Brett and Kate McKay.
"No matter what profession you find yourself in, the most essential function of the pocket notebook is to provide a place to capture the ideas that spring to mind throughout the day. You may get a business idea, an insight into something you or a loved one has been struggling with, or hear a quote you wish to record. The net is abuzz with the news that the venerable Blackwing pencils are about to make a comeback. In a post at BoingBoing, our friend Mark Frauenfelder quoted a letter from the California Cedar Products Company about their acquisition of the trademark.
I share Mark's high hopes "that the new Blackwing will live up to the slogan that was stamped in gold foil on the original: "Half the Pressure, Twice the Speed."
The name is a little strange but this is one of the most functional and easy to make penholders I've seen. Gnat Gnat boasts of over 10,000 downloads of the pdf instructions. Entirely believable.
Stylish, functional and very green - these pencils are made out of recycled newspapers. From Abe's market which sells them:
"Pencils aren't as earth-friendly as we would like to think. In fact, parents might be shocked to find out that the yellow pencils they grew up using are made out of the 4 billion trees cut down worldwide for paper industries -- which leads to deforestation and habitat loss."
LINKTerry Shipman alerted us to a site called Saddleback Leather Co. where you can almost hear the cattle's hooves in the distance. Says Terry:
"I recently found that the same place I got the best wallet I have ever owned now makes a Moleskine cover. Made with Heavy Duty leather, heavy duty stitching, and a 100 year warranty. Saddleback leather says their products will last long enough that my grandchildren will fight over it. I believe it! "
Paul Heaston describes himself as a "Native San Antonian. Lived in Montana. Now back in Texas. Sketches, paints, draws, eats a lot of Mexican food." I'd describe his blog as awesome. Checkout his latest Moleskine sketches here. The rest of the site is full of the same pen-and-ink goodness.
Scott Campbell known throughout for his ink-on-skin wizardry, has shared his talents with Moleskine in these limited edition Societe Perrier notebooks.
There are 10 available, to be won in a contest. Details here. Hurry, deadline's today.
